The New Designers Exhibition held at the Business Design Centre, London, on June 28th showcased 3000 of the most promising graduate talent from the UK’s leading fashion and textiles courses. For the last three years, AW Hainsworth has presented the Hainsworth Statement Award which looks for students whose collection not only shows creativity, but innovation and commercial viability.
This year the Hainsworth Statement Award went to Claire Tagg from UCA Rochester, she wins either; Hainsworth cloth, a cash prize or a combination of both to a value of £1000 and will be invited to visit the Hainsworth Mill.
Her first collection impressed the Hainsworth judges with designs that screamed glamour and style, whilst telling a story of her childhood fascination of becoming an Air Stewardess.
The garments in the collection explored uniforms from the aviation industry. The winning collection displayed at the New Designers Awards included a structured pilot inspired coat, created using softer couture fabric rather than the hardwearing heavyweight materials usually associated with the uniform.
Claire’s garments included a series of illustrations printed onto a neutral palette which reflected her passion for a career in the industry. She incorporated her contrasting feelings of elegance and luxury with harsher textures representing the hard work and day to day realties of a role in the aviation industry.
Claire explains the feeling of winning the award.
“It’s such a great feeling knowing that your work has been chosen out of all of the talented graduates. I am so excited to start on my next collection and cannot thank Hainsworth enough for giving me this opportunity”
We are eagerly awaiting Claire’s next collection which she has told us expands on her first. To find out more about Claire’s work, visit her website www.clairetagg.com
