The Lupton Connection

BBC Look North will be visiting Hainsworth today to interview Adam Hainsworth, Commercial Director about the company’s connection with the Lupton family. The interview will be on BBC Look North on Monday 18th April.

Soon-to-be Princess Kate Middleton’s great-grandmother, Olive Lupton owned William Lupton & Co Ltd which Hainsworth acquired in 1958. Lupton’s main trade was the collar melton; a specialised woollen cloth used for lining jacket collars.

The Hainsworth logo today came from the acquisition of William Lupton & Co in 1958 and over the years the backward facing wolf (lupus) has evolved into a forward facing griffin. If Hainsworth had not bought the goodwill and trade of William Lupton & Co Ltd, the company may have not continued. Little did Kate Middleton’s family realise in 1958 when they sold William Lupton & Co Ltd to Hainsworth that they were safeguarding the future of England’s ceremonial uniforms.

With the run up to the Royal Wedding on the 29th April, Hainsworth is honoured to have this Royal connection.

Watch the interview on BBC Look North on Monday 18th April between 6:30pm and 7pm.
