Hainsworth Gems
A few interesting facts
The Hainsworth history is one of world firsts, royalty, successful partnerships, innovation, success and above all textiles. Whether it's high quality textiles, textile development or independent testing and certification, Hainsworth is there. The following are a few of the 'gems' from our long and successful history. You can view 'ALL', or filter them by specific area of interest. Enjoy.
Total control
As a fully vertically integrated textile manufacturer, Hainsworth carries out every stage of the manufacturing process in-house, from the selection of raw wool to finished cloth, and supply material cut to size.
Harnessing expertise
Our inherent understanding of wool and its properties allowed us to develop our Hainsworth Titan® fabric which increases thermal protection and breathability, whilst reducing overall garment weight and bulk.
Leading innovation
Hainsworth developed Repel+, a durable finish providing addition protective properties to fabrics. Repel+ protects against hazardous chemicals and was the first to meet the requirements of BS7979-10:2004 for public order coveralls.
The finer detail
Our manufacturing skills ensure our consistent adherence to the strictest specifications, including manufacturing textiles to within 0.05mm tolerance, the thickness of a piece of paper.
Award winning
The development and launch of our Hainsworth Titan® fabric helped Hainsworth win the Du Pont European Innovation Award in 2002.
An established name
The Hainsworth brand has been synonymous with high quality wool and textile manufacturer for over 225 years, ever since Abimelech Hainsworth started work in 1753.
Royal approval
The design and development of our protective Hainsworth Titan® fabric won Hainsworth the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation, which was presented to the company by HRH The Duke of York in July 2003.
Bringing science to life
Our industry expertise, combined with our UKAS accredited research and testing laboratory, allows Hainsworth to self-certify to global standards and gives us a unique competitive edge.
Quality control
Strict control processes that have been recognised with the receipt of the BSI ISO9001 Quality Standards Mark for design development and manufacturing, ensure consistency against exacting specifications.
Proud heritage
In 1783 Abimelech Hainsworth began his working life as a cloth merchant by collecting fabric from local cottages and selling it at Leeds market. Such was the demand that he opened his first factory in 1800.
Market pioneers
In 1975 Hainsworth was the first company to introduce Nomex® fabrics into the UK, the heat and flame resistant textile made by DuPont.
Successful partnerships
As a DuPont Nomex Quality Partner, and the first in Europe, Hainsworth is committed to the high quality standards expected in the protective apparel market.
Flying high
When the Breitling Orbiter 3 became the first hot air balloon to successfully circumnavigate the globe in 1999, it did so in no small part to Hainsworth fabrics which were pivotal to the balloon’s construction.
Best sellers
In partnership with DuPont, Hainsworth developed Nomex® Delta T (Nomex® Tough) which was the best selling outshell fabric for fire fighters in the early 1990s, and is still sold today.
Altitude protection
Hainsworth has pioneered the development of aramid fabrics to protect fighter pilots in the UK, as well as developing fabrics for use in the latest anti-gravity garments.
